Lewis County Sex Offender Checks
The official starting point is the West Virginia State Police Sex Offender Registry. Select the county option and choose LEWIS when the goal is a county-wide view. A name search is better when a specific person is known. City and street searches can narrow the result set, while Neighborhood Search tests a point and radius. Each route answers a different question, so a blank name result should not be treated as proof that no public registration exists near an address.
WVSP states that the registry is updated daily, yet it also disclaims complete accuracy and makes no offender-specific risk assessment. Match more than a name. Read the residence, age, physical description, offense information, and last-modified date. The public portal has no login or fee, and it does not offer bulk export or sorting. For suspected errors or noncompliance, use the tip tab, email the registry, call its central office, or contact the covering WVSP detachment. The Lewis County Sheriff page remains a local law-enforcement contact, but it is not the registration counter.
Lewis County Registry Search Fields
The Lewis County registry search separates its tools into Basic, Advanced, Internet, Neighborhood, Links, and Submit a Tip tabs. Basic search can use last name, street name, city, or county. Advanced search combines more fields and lets the user limit results to wanted persons or sexually violent predators. Internet Search checks a known registered email address or username. It is not an alert subscription.
The official WVSP search screen shows how those choices are divided before a Lewis County search begins.
The screen helps a reader pick a query that fits the known fact instead of forcing every lookup through a surname.
| Field | Type | Required | Options or limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Search By | Dropdown | Yes | Last Name, Street Name, City, or County |
| Search Text | Text | Conditional | Maximum 200 characters |
| County | Dropdown | Conditional | LEWIS, all counties, or out of state |
| Advanced fields | Text and dropdown | No | Name, street, city, county, and result limit |
| Internet identifier | Text | Yes for that tab | Registered email or username, 1 to 255 characters |
| Neighborhood | Address fields | Yes | Street, city, ZIP, and 1 to 25 mile radius |
West Virginia State Police Sex Offender Registry Searches
A sound Lewis County offender lookup starts by accepting the WVSP conditions and choosing the smallest useful Lewis County scope. County search is broad. Neighborhood search is tied to a place. Name and Internet searches require a known person or identifier. The portal does not promise fuzzy matching, so spelling matters. A larger radius may cross a city or county line.
- Read and accept the WVSP disclaimer, including its accuracy and lawful-use limits.
- Choose Basic County and LEWIS, or select a more precise name, city, street, Internet, or Neighborhood search.
- Compare the linked results by name, age, race, gender, and listed city or street rather than relying on one field.
- Open the profile and review residence, offense facts, listed local ties, and the last-modified date before drawing a conclusion.
If the state portal is unavailable, contact the WVSP registry at 304-746-2133 or registry@wvsp.gov. For a search that crosses state lines, add the federal National Sex Offender Public Website. NSOPW gathers participating registry results, but its address radius depends on coordinates supplied by each jurisdiction. It supplements rather than replaces the West Virginia profile.
The NSOPW public search illustrates that separate cross-state layer.
Using both official systems is most useful when a past address or a nearby state may affect the search.
Lewis County Neighborhood Radius Searches
Neighborhood Search accepts a street, city, five-digit ZIP code, and one of six radii: 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, or 25 miles. Small radii help with a close address-area check. Wider radii can include rural Lewis County and neighboring jurisdictions. A result inside the radius is not necessarily within an incorporated town boundary. The official Lewis County site identifies Weston and Jane Lew as its municipalities, with much of the county outside either town.
The Lewis County map-style query is best treated as a location filter, not a measure of danger. WVSP expressly says it does not provide offender-specific risk assessments. The agency also says State Police has no general power to dictate where a person lives unless a court order supplies that restriction. Do not infer an unlawful address merely because a profile is near a school, park, or other familiar place.
Note: Internet Search checks a known registered identifier and does not send notices when a registrant moves near an address.
Registry Profiles: What They Show
A public Lewis County profile can show a name and photograph, full date of birth, age, race, gender, height, weight, hair, and eye color. Lewis County residence rows may list current places tied to the registration. The public sample reviewed for Lewis County research also showed registered property, workplace and school localities, offenses, conviction dates, victim relationship and age-band information, an offense narrative, a tip link, and a last-modified date. Describe those fields with care. Never republish a private person’s profile data.
| Identity | Name, photograph, full birth date, age, and basic physical description may appear. |
|---|---|
| Residence | Residence and registered-property tables can identify places reported to WVSP. |
| Local ties | Workplace and school entries may show city, county, and state rather than every private detail. |
| Offense | The profile can state the offense, conviction date, victim relationship, age band, and narrative. |
| Registry label | West Virginia public profiles do not use the federal Tier I, II, or III labels. |
| Freshness | The last-modified date helps judge timing but does not guarantee that all facts are complete. |
A last-modified date describes the public page, not the moment every underlying fact was verified. Compare it with the listed residence and offense data, then report a suspected error through WVSP instead of copying personal details elsewhere.
Lewis County Profiles Without Tiers
A missing tier is normal on a Lewis County result in the West Virginia public registry. State law instead turns on the qualifying offense and circumstances that set a ten-year or lifetime duty. A sexually violent predator has a lifetime term and more frequent reporting. The Lewis County profile inspected during research did not display aliases, tattoos, vehicles, Internet identifiers, a compliance label, or a tier, even though WVSP may collect some of those items under law.
West Virginia Code §15-12-2 authorizes collection of a wider set of Lewis County information, including fingerprints, palm prints, vehicles, Internet and phone identifiers, identity documents, and other registration facts. Public display is narrower. This gap protects data that the state needs for administration but does not publish in each profile. A blank public field therefore should not be read as proof that WVSP never collected the fact.
Registration Levels and Duties in West Virginia
Lewis County registration follows West Virginia duration and verification duties rather than a public three-tier label. Under §15-12-4, an ordinary qualifying Lewis County registration generally lasts ten years after release or placement on supervision. Early release from supervision does not shorten that span. Prior qualifying convictions, multiple victims or violations, sexually violent offenses, sexually violent predator findings, and certain offenses involving a minor can lead to lifetime registration.
The official duration statute sets out the ten-year and lifetime rules used in Lewis County.
The statute explains why the duty shown in a case cannot be reduced to a federal-looking tier number.
| West Virginia category | Duration | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary qualifying registration | Ten years after release or supervision placement | Annual WVSP verification in the birth month |
| Lifetime registration | Life when statutory lifetime conditions apply | Generally annual |
| Sexually violent predator | Life | Reports in January, April, July, and October, with verification every 90 days |
Lewis County Registration at WVSP
Registration is completed in person with the covering West Virginia State Police detachment, not at the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. This is a common local routing error because the sheriff handles county law enforcement and court duties at the Judicial Annex. The Lewis County office directory helps identify those county roles, while the registry remains a WVSP program. A person with a duty to register should confirm the covering detachment and appointment process with State Police rather than relying on a county counter.
State law sets an annual registration fee of $125, paid during the January 1 through June 30 period. Verification timing varies by category under W. Va. Code §15-12-10. The public portal does not replace in-person reporting. It also does not show every data point that WVSP collects. Questions about a duty, a reported change, or a verification date belong with the registry program or legal counsel, not with a public search result.
Note: The Lewis County sheriff is not the registry counter even though it is the main county law-enforcement office.
Lewis County Registry Errors and Tips
Wrong or stale Lewis County information should be reported, not confronted. The registry’s Submit a Tip tab requests an email address, subject, description, and CAPTCHA. Its fields allow up to 255 characters for the email and subject and up to 2,000 for the description. Give a clear reason for the concern, the relevant Lewis County profile, the field that appears wrong, and a source that can help WVSP check it. Do not post or spread the disputed detail while the agency reviews it.
The central registry can be reached at 304-746-2133, registry@wvsp.gov, or 701 Jefferson Road, South Charleston, WV 25309. The covering Lewis County detachment is another route for suspected noncompliance. The portal has no user account, export, or saved-search alert function. Save only the neutral facts needed for a report and use the profile’s last-modified date to describe when the public entry was last changed.
Using Registry Information Lawfully
The Lewis County registry record supports family safety and community awareness. It does not declare that a person will offend, and it does not replace direct contact with law enforcement during an emergency. West Virginia Code §15-12-5 governs public and community notification. WVSP’s conditions add strict limits: the information may not be used to threaten, intimidate, or harass a registrant or the person’s household.
The official registry disclaimer places the lawful-use warning before access to Lewis County sex offender results.
That warning belongs with every Lewis County search because public access does not authorize retaliation or direct action against a listed person.
Misuse can be a crime: Do not threaten, intimidate, or harass anyone with Lewis County registry information. WVSP warns that misuse can bring civil or criminal consequences under West Virginia law, including the notification framework in §15-12-5.
